Lingual STB is an unusual type of brace in that it fits on the inside of the teeth which makes it practically invisible to the onlooker. This fixed brace is bonded with dental cement onto the back of teeth which differs from the normal front facing brace.
There are several types of lingual brace but here at Birmingham Braces we have the STB Light Lingual System.
The Lingual STB is both custom made and discreet and is similar to the Invisalign system in that aspect.
The Lingual brace is comprised of small metal pieces called ‘brackets’ which are directly fixed to the teeth. These brackets are then connected together by a series of archwires. They can be worn on both the upper and lower teeth.
They are an ideal choice for those patients who want an unobtrusive type of brace but for whatever reason are unable to have aligners. This means waving goodbye to visible ceramic or metal braces.
This type of brace is suitable for most patients except those with very small teeth or children who still have some milk teeth. It is used to correct the following orthodontic problems:
- Malocclusion (as a result of misaligned teeth)
- Widely spaced teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Rotated teeth
The benefits of Lingual STB
- Comfortable type of brace
- Minimal speech impairment and tongue soreness compared to other lingual braces
- Aesthetically pleasing
The Lingual STB process
Once the brace is fixed in position it is a case of adapting to a new tongue position and speech although there is minimal disruption with the Lingual STB system. You are advised to have regular checks up during the treatment period to monitor the risk of plaque development and tooth decay.
The treatment period can take from 1 to 3 years.
